GMM presents: Nebular Spool - Ruins
by GMM on July 20th 2008, at 22:22 CET

Another of the mysterious Nebular Spools has come into our possession. Suddenly appearing where nothing can appear, this spool of lo-fi, retro-organic deadscapes materializes itself. As usual, a cryptic, machine-typed note was all left for explanation:

Deeper into the ruins there are found more broken computers. Some are fragment, some are whole, others are skeleton. There is not much time for me to spend on else, so I set them all together again as possible. I discover only more of the music noises and the visual stories about the collapse. They look made up.

I like to compose the pieces complete, and play on my mechanical speaker at the night fire. They are broken memories, but so are my time.

I sense a more melancholic and lonesome tone than the previous Nebular Spool. My research into where, and perhaps, when, this entity is communicating these sordid themes of apocalyptic misfortune to me, has so far been futile.

One can only deduct from the sounds themselves.

I choose therefore to release this material, as an album, for free, or for purchase in higher quality. Perchance there are connections, or clues in the clouds - which will shed light on this shaded mystery.

Ahh! I've been waiting for new material from you for a while now, so this is promising. Bought the 320 kbps release, gonna listen to it now, can't wait! ;)

Nice artwork too, I like the nebular spool "identity" thing ;)

Bought it, loved it, shamelessly plugged it (http://blog.gotbrain.de/) ^^
Well done, Mr.

Thanks for the deutschen plug, Mr Blunt, sehr appreciated

I know it has been quiet from me production wise the last months. But actually this album was done in February, and ready by March, only artwork and website was left... but I was spectacularly broke and had to grab as many production gigs as possible to make ends meet during spring and early summer. So Ruins stayed at 99% finished, until last week when I finally had a window of opportunity to wrap up things, and get it out.

There are other releases on their way with similar status; almost ready - just need time (and sometimes funding) to kick them out. The funding bit is now falling into place with this NRK TV show gig.

Should be a fine autumn I think!

Absolutely amazing work, Gisle. The feeling that flows through this album is absolutely amazing, and this is coming from a person who typically doesn't listen to chillout music. Even as I type this from my grandmother's house from Maine, USA, listening to it on tiny little 1998 era Dell speakers, it still sounds incredible.

I have a bit of a question about the production though, if you don't mind me asking. Was the entire album done as one very very long track, or did you work on each track separately, then brought them together in a megamix with the final steps of the album? I could easily see you doing both, to be quite honest Thanks in advance.

And don't worry about finding ways to make ends meet with the weeks approaching, all musicians (including myslf) have times like that. You're an absolutely astounding artist who will always be able to touch that lovely subcontious mindset in the brain that's commonly known as the "heart." As a person who looks up to you as an idol and a massive influence, you certainly have done that from my perspective.

All the best, Gisle, from one musician to another.

Hi Gisle,

it was very nice and very unexpected surprise. I have to confess I overlooked the 1st Nebular Spool release .... poor me :-) Downloading it right now.

Ruins suit my musical taste in a way Unicorn didnt. After couple of listenings The River Ghost Incident seems to be numero uno for me. Awesome atmosphere, love the lead from 1:27 on and pulsing bass synth with "taak taak" rythm from 2:01 makes my day.

Following closely your blog I am really happy to see you are doing well. Hope to see you in Prague one day ... otherwise I will have to go to Bergen to shake hands with my old pal Gisle :-)

All the best ...
Martin
