Music for “What is the City…”, the opening work at Festspillene i Bergen, 2023

I am creating and performing the music for the opening work of the 2023 Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen).

Who ARE we? A gigantic, yellow catwalk presents the real people of a city, and their intimate histories.

This media-heavy large-scale production will incorporate real citizens, live music, video-walls, text and photography. The work is titled “What Is the City but the People?“, and will be performed at the main city square Festplassen in the city centre. I am working with a splendid and inspirational team consisting of director Richard Gregory and dramaturg Linda Børnes, text author Finn Tokvam, and photographer Thor Brødreskift. I’m very grateful for the invitation from new festival director Lars Petter Hagen to work on this.

This will take place May 24th at 12:30. From the programme: “The opening ceremony marks the beginning of the 15 days of the Festival. The queen and the king will be present. The event is free and open for all.” I understand it will also be live-streamed so you can watch it from afar.

I’m currently deep in composition and production, started already a month ago. This project will take most of my time and focus now for April and May. I’m documenting the process on Patreon, if you’d like to follow and see “behind-the-scenes” of my work. We will also have a Patreon meetup in Bergen after the show.

Regular Ugress activity (and next livestream) will continue in June.
