On June 14th I will give a 40 minute presentation on my work with Retrotopia at NORCON 31, the yearly Norwegian science fiction and fantasy festival.
The topic of my talk is “Retrotopia – sci-fi visions in live music video performance”. This talk will be a fun presentation and realtime demonstration of Retrotopia as an immersive live music, cinema, and audiovisual performance.
I’m tentatively scheduled for a Saturday 20:00 slot, but the full final programme is not yet announced. The whole festival takes place 13. – 15. juni 2025 at Realfagsbiblioteket, Oslo University.
From mid-century atomic monsters to psychedelic 60s mind-scapes, through working-class space operas of the 70s… via VHS tapes tracking the cybernetic paranoia of the 80s, and the existential VR crises of the 90s… Retrotopia reconstructs the web of yesterday’s futures. For sci-fi connoisseurs it’s effectively a frantic nostalgia-trip on hyper-speed.
For this presentation, we’ll look at the concept, development and production, using music, photo and video examples. The talk and tone is light and entertaining, though heed this – we’re surfing a top darker currents.
